Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have inspired Wrexham’s rise up the leagues with players showing their appreciation.
Wrexham have been on a rapid rise from the National League to League One with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds at the heart of the journey.
McElhenney and Reynolds paid £2million to purchase Wrexham in 2021 and their project has been a roaring success so far.
Wrexham’s back-to-back promotions mean Phil Parkinson and co are now competing at League One level – and have started the season very well.
Off the pitch, Wrexham have captured hearts across the world thanks to ‘Welcome to Wrexham’, with the documentary generating global interest.

The Hollywood ownership has not just been a publicity stunt with McElhenney and Reynolds taking a keen interest in the community as well as adding a personal touch with the players.
Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has praised McElhenney and Reynolds for being ‘so involved’ at Wrexham, something he hasn’t experienced at other clubs.
Paul Mullin has even highlighted Reynolds’ rapport with the Wrexham players, noting that Reynolds texts him after every game.
Wrexham players clearly love McElhenney and Reynolds and Jacob Mendy is no different.
Speaking on the official FA Cup X account, Mendy noted that McElhenney and Reynolds have made a huge difference.
Mendy feels that McElhenney and Reynolds are ‘great owners’ praising them for being so invested in the Wrexham cause.
“They are very invested in the team and in the club, in the town,” said Mendy. “You can tell the difference from when they weren’t here.
“Now that they’re here, as I said, they’re really invested so everyone’s feeling their support and they’re great owners,” he added.
McElhenney and Reynolds inspiring other celebrities
The Wrexham story has generated so much attention that other celebrities are starting to explore football.
Tom Brady sparred with McElhenney on social media having joined the Birmingham City project whilst another former NFL superstar is now at Burnley in J.J. Watt.
US rapper A$AP Rocky is trying to purchase Tranmere Rovers and pop star Brian McFadden has warned Reynolds having invested in Chorley.
We would expect to see more and more celebrities move into football investment and ownership having seen the success of the Wrexham story.
Matching McElhenney and Reynolds in terms of on and off-field success won’t be easy but Wrexham may be involved in a few more celebrity v celebrity battles down the line.
